A letter from Leroy Lawrence, Founder
24th March 2022
In 2008 I was in the ascendency of a stockbroking career, as I became the first black founder of a UK regulated stockbroking firm in the city of London.
In hindsight, FinTech was very much an afterthought when it came to user experience. Whilst our clients had access to our online platform it was responsible for less than 3% of our company revenue.
However, we began to see the increased focus on customer facing fintech when those who did left everyone else in the dark ages financially. When I went on to the role of CEO at a Swiss registered investment bank 4 years later. My main challenge was to lead an old institution into the new age of customer interaction.
Since then I have advised, invested in and operated with a broad scope of mostly technology based start-ups in the US and Europe.
In 2020, whilst on a work trip to East Africa my colleagues and I decided to visit the beautiful island of Zanzibar. I found myself perusing the street markets and having to make tough decisions on what products to leave behind due to limited luggage space. I wondered if others also suffered with this age old problem.
On my return to the UK I set about researching the answer to this question and upon confirmation I began to design and build what became the Pigee App.
As I built a team around Pigee we realised that sellers who make a living based on their interaction with tourists seldom made recurring sales. They suffered heavily during times of low visitors. Such as the off-season or the COVID pandemic. Pigee will solve first world problems whilst also allowing small business owners to earn 10x and become part of the global ecommerce market.
Building this product has meant asking tough questions and forming relationships with broad seller use-cases. Whilst still offering a niche product to the customer. Communication, pricing and convenience have been the drivers for a successful offering.
Whilst I am a person driven by the bottom line, our team is customer and community focused. We are energised by solving the tough and sometimes small problems. Whether they are in logistics, sustainability or simply making sure our users save time and money. We are greatly enjoying this process and hope our energy translates to Pigee’s users.
Our success will come with usability, pricing and stickiness. This means really listening and testing our output as only the market can decide if something works or not. We will increase our partners in shipping, first mile localised fulfilment and payment services. To keep prices low and localised flexibility high.
I want you to know that Pigee is a no ego organisation. I will listen to you, value our investors and customers, and grow with you as we build something very special.
